Season 17 of “Grey’s Anatomy” starts on April 28th. These cherished characters celebrate a (temporary) return.

All fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” should have marked Wednesday evening (April 28) in their calendars, because the 17th season of the popular doctor series starts on ProSieben. The TV viewers can not only look forward to a lot of tension from the corona pandemic integrated into the plot. The return of a number of former characters will also make for special moments. Warning, spoilers!

Warning, spoilers! There are many reunions

It has been known for a good five months that one of the absolute series favorites will be seen again in the new episodes: Dr. Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy. Again played by Patrick Dempsey (55, “Bridget Jones’ Baby”), the husband of serial heroine Dr. Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo, 51) right at the end of the opening episode on – on a magical beach, the screenwriter Krista Vernoff (47) previously described as a kind of “intermediate place”. The background: Meredith is fighting a Covid 19 disease and therefore sees people from her past in her dreams.

In addition to McDreamy, in these dreams the doctor also meets his former best friend McSexy alias Dr. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane, 48) and her half-sister Dr. Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh, 39) again. The resident and plastic surgeon, who were at times a couple, made their last appearances at the end of season eight and the beginning of season nine, respectively. Both succumbed one after the other to the consequences of their injuries sustained in a serious plane crash – Gray still at the scene of the accident, Sloan in the hospital.

George O’Malley and April Kepner are also returning

Another surprise is provided by TR Knight (48). The actor appears again in the new “Grey’s Anatomy” episodes as Dr. George O’Malley up. Alongside Patrick Dempsey, he is the second series star among the (temporary) returnees who were part of the original cast from 2005. The now 48-year-old played his role of the clumsy budding doctor O’Malley, who has ambitions to join the Army in later episodes, until the end of season five. Before George could fulfill his plan, however, he too died an accidental death much too early.

In March, ABC, the US house broadcaster of the doctor series, also had the return of Sarah Drew, 40, is confirmed. The actress, who was born in the US state of New York, should slip into her well-known role again and cause enthusiasm among the fans. When Dr. April Kepner had given up her post of trauma surgeon at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital in Season 14 to attend to the medical care of the homeless. It is still unclear whether she is the only living figure among the returnees to visit Meredith on the beach.

Season start with series crossover of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Seattle Firefighters”

The Wednesday series begins at ProSieben on April 28th with a crossover episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” and the spin-off “Seattle Firefighters”, in which everything revolves around the lives of men and women in a fire station. In the middle of the corona pandemic, a group of teenagers accidentally set off a serious fire. For this reason, the station will initially show the first episode of the fourth season of “Seattle Firefighters” on Wednesday at 8:15 pm. Immediately afterwards, “Grey’s Anatomy” continues at 9:15 pm. As of the following Wednesday (May 5), the order of the two US series will be reversed again.

The new episodes go online one week before they are broadcast on ProSieben on the in-house streaming service Joyn and on Disney +.
