The Grimme Institute has announced the winners of this year’s Grimme Prize. These include Tim Mälzer and Jan Böhmermann.
On April 21, the 59th Grimme Prize will be awarded in the Marler Theater. It has already been decided who can look forward to one of the coveted media prizes. The Grimme Institute announced the names of the award winners on Tuesday (March 21) published on its website.
The expert jury, consisting of media experts, awarded a total of 16 awards in four categories and three special prizes. TV chef Tim Mälzer (52) secured two prizes. His VOX format “Zum Schwarzwälder Hirsch – an extraordinary kitchen crew and Tim Mälzer” not only impressed in the “Entertainment” category, but also received the audience award from the Marler Group. In addition to Mälzer, Jan Böhmermann (42) also scored in the “Entertainment” category with his “ZDF Magazin Royale”. In addition, the actors of the Netflix success “Fab Five” get a special award for their ensemble performance.
Public broadcasters clear up
The Netflix streaming service is also represented in the “Fiction” category with the “Kleo” series. However, this dominates the ZDF with three productions: “The Wannsee Conference”, “In the Fire – Two Sisters” and “Neuland”. In addition, the student jury awarded a prize to the horror film “Sleep”. The special prize also goes to a ZDF project: Caroline Link (58) was honored for the book and direction of the series “Safe”.
The public broadcasters are also among the front runners in the other categories. The winners in the “Information & Culture” category include “Atomic Power Forever” (SWR/NDR), “The Story in the First: Life after Butscha – Trauma and Hope” (WDR), “The Other Side of the River” (Arte ) and “Injustice and Resistance – Romani Rose and the Civil Rights Movement” (ZDF/3sat). The editors of the RBB format “Contrasts” received the Grimme Prize for special journalistic achievement “for the continuous investigative research on peripheral issues of right-wing radicalism”.
In the “Children & Youth” category, an RBB production also wins with “Sandman Frame: Recycling Vehicle”. Other prizes go to Funk’s TikTok channel “sympathisch”, the online content network of ARD and ZDF, and to “STRG_F with the Taliban: Why do people like them?” from NDR and radio.
Special honor for Maren Kroymann
Furthermore, the German Adult Education Association honors comedian Maren Kroymann (73) with the so-called “special honor”. DVV President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (60) calls Kroymann a “pioneer in German television history”. “She was the first woman to have her own satirical program on ARD. She used this stage to show that women on television are not just accessories, that they are not only entitled to their own voice, but also their own attitude,” quotes a press release Kramp- cart builder.
Grimme director Frauke Gerlach (59) summarizes: “All in all, the awards cover a wide range of topics, they inform us, encourage us to think and act.” They would demonstrate the “resilience, diversity and innovation” of television.
