Doctor allowed to see overthrown president of Niger

CNN recently reported that the ousted president of Niger only gets raw rice and noodles for food from his tormentors. Now at least Mohamed Bazoum’s doctor is allowed to visit him and his family. He has groceries with him. There is also an assessment of Bazoum’s health.

The President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted at the end of July, received a visit from a doctor, according to information from those close to him. The president “received a visit from his doctor today,” a person close to Bazoum told AFP. The doctor brought groceries for Bazoum, his wife and son, who are being held together. “Given the situation, he’s fine,” the person said.

The democratically elected president of Niger was overthrown on July 26 by the military, who then took power in the country. The condition of Bazoum and his family, and the conditions in which they were held, raised international concerns. Among others, the EU and the African Union were alarmed.

blinking is “confused”

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk said the conditions under which Bazoum was being held “could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment” and violate international human rights. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that he was “dismayed” by the refusal by those responsible for the coup to release Bazoum’s family as a “show of goodwill”.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) said they had spoken to Bazoum in the past few days. Accordingly, the 63-year-old President said the conditions for his wife, 20-year-old son and he were “inhuman and cruel”. CNN had previously reported that Bazoum was being held in complete isolation by the military and was only being fed raw rice and noodles.
