Grocery delivery: Gorillas will swallow Frichti

The German company and the French company did not specify the financial contours of the operation.

The grocery delivery sector is constantly reconfiguring itself. The German Gorillas, which arrived on the French market a year ago, has just entered into exclusive negotiations with Frichti with a view to its acquisition. This merger would consolidate the position of the German start-up in this young, extremely competitive market: no less than eight express delivery players launched in France in 2020. According to a recent ranking carried out by Foxintelligence, Frichti is the third player delivery of groceries in Île-de-France (12% market share) and number one in the express delivery niche.

Gorillas, which is awash in cash after raising 800 million euros in September 2021 and 240 million in March, takes a 5.2% market share. “Between the two of us, we will be the second player in Île-de-France ahead of Carrefour for same-day deliveries.»underlines Julia Bijaoui, co-founder and co-CEO of Frichti.

Created in 2015 to deliver meals to homes, Frichti has gradually developed its grocery delivery business. This activity, boosted by the pandemic, now represents 60% of its turnover. Frichti launched its own private label in October.

The Frenchman is not destined to disappear in the event of a takeover by Gorillas. The two actors would continue to operate in France under their own banner. But the 100% takeover of Frichti by Gorillas would make it possible to achieve synergies. The German start-up’s offer has recently been expanded with Monoprix’s own brands. It will be able to enrich itself with prepared meals and Frichti’s own brands. Together, the two players will benefit from better purchasing conditions, and will own more than 50 mini-warehouses in France, more than their competitors.
