Guido Maria Kretschmer wanted to be a doctor. As we all know, things turned out differently. Nevertheless, he advises young people to work in retirement homes.
Designer and presenter Guido Maria Kretschmer (58) advises young people to go into care. “I believe that many people could experience a very human socialization,” he says in an interview with the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.
“Everyone is now taking a sabbatical after school and petting kangaroos in Australia or running around with llamas in South America. Maybe some people would do well to work in a retirement home instead,” says the man who knows what he’s talking about . Kretschmer worked in a hospital as a teenager, trained as a nurse and wanted to become a doctor.
Dropped out of medical school
But right from the start of his studies it was clear to him that his calling was different. “I simply had this great creative longing within me, which is why I dropped out of medical school after two semesters,” says the fashion designer.
Nevertheless, he fondly remembers his time as a nurse. “I was totally happy there – but I also really like people,” enthuses the “Shopping Queen” host. “I gained a lot for my life and for my job,” he adds. For example, he sat at the bedside of many women who had mastectomies. “Designing for these women is also easy for me. I do it with pleasure and with love,” says Kretschmer. In addition, dealing with the “many wonderful older people and their stories” can help put your own problems into perspective a bit.
Guido Maria Kretschmer presented his creations for the first time at Berlin Fashion Week in 2005. Since 2012 he has hosted the television show “Shopping Queen” (VOX).
