In 2023, Guido Maria Kretschmer had to say goodbye to his parents. Now the fashion designer spoke in detail about the difficult loss of his family.

How bad must it be to lose your father and mother so quickly after each other? Guido Maria Kretschmer, 58, unfortunately had to go through this terrible experience last year. In August 2023, the designer made public the sad fact that his beloved father Erich Kretschmer had passed away. In December, just a few days before Christmas and just a few months after the loss of her father, Mama Marianne closed her eyes forever. “My beloved mother followed my father to heaven,” were the sad, beautiful words that Guido found on his Instagram account for the bitter loss.

Guido Maria Kretschmer: Emotional farewells shaped his 2023

Having to say goodbye forever to his beloved parents at such a short distance – a deep turning point in the life of the otherwise cheerful fashion designer. After all, Erich and Marianne Kretschmer have always been two pillars for Guido, two constants in his life. Great parents who always protected him and raised him extremely lovingly and with whom he always felt close.

You can hardly find a picture of the celebrated designer in which he is not beaming from ear to ear. Always positive, always in a great mood. But the past year made it more than clear that the sun doesn’t always shine in Guido Maria Kretschmer’s life.

As a guest on the NDR program “deep & clear”, Kretschmer spoke in detail for the first time about how these two strokes of fate affected his life. “I could have married both of them, I could have spent my life with both of them forever,” he described his mother and father as such fine and great people. “And that is a great gift.” So you can imagine how much the loss of both of them hurt him and probably hurts him forever.

“A hole that couldn’t be closed”

On his father’s deathbed, he thought: “My first thought was, ‘Now I’m an orphan, how am I going to manage?’ How will I no longer be able to have him as a regulator of my life? Because I loved him so much and he was so similar to me in so many moments – I had a hole that couldn’t be closed, I really felt it. ” Although Guido continued to work, he was sometimes overcome by sadness and tears. “I was really badly hurt.”

At the same time, Guido Maria Kretschmer had to experience how his mother became ill and became demented at the time when his father was about to die in order to possibly free himself from this difficult situation. Perhaps also out of self-protection because she lost her beloved Erich, whom she would follow just a few months later. “I never thought that my mother would die so quickly,” summarized Guido Maria Kretschmer, who got the call while filming that his beloved mother would probably die too. He completed the shoot like a “Prussian soldier” and then immediately drove to the clinic, had a bed set up right next to his mother, looked after her, spent the night with her and held her in his arms. “It was difficult, but she was safe with me,” he said, describing the bad but also beautiful last hours with his mother.

“When my mother died, everything was gone. I was almost no longer able to drive to Hamburg. I was more lost than I had ever been in my entire life. I was completely alone. ” But Guido Maria Kretschmer was and is certainly not alone. The bond with his three siblings became (even) closer. In addition, of course, he always has his husband Frank Mutters, 69, by his side, who certainly carried him through the difficult times.
