Guido Maria Kretschmer is a self-confessed dog lover. A total of five greyhounds belong to his family – in an interview he told us the personal story behind it.

Anyone who knows Guido Maria Kretschmer from television knows that the man has many passions. When it comes to fashion and furniture, shopping and questions of style, he is a real professional. But one of his greatest loves is waiting for him away from the red carpet and instead on his own carpet when he comes home after a long shoot: the designer counts five Russian greyhounds, called borzoi, in his family. In an interview we chatted with Guido about his private happiness with dogs.

Editor: Tell me, Guido, how did you actually get your dogs?

Guido Maria Kretschmer: “I always had three because I have greyhounds and they like to live in groups. I like to think that they are not alone when I’m away. They are a bit feline, like cheetahs, they appreciate very much to be by yourself.”

It’s five now, isn’t it?

“It wasn’t planned that there would be so many. First I had three, but in the meantime one of us died, she was poisoned.”

I’m sorry for that.

“Then we got a dog from the emergency rescue service in Spain, a bitch from the killing station came to us. There was no question that we would take her in.

Yes, and then they were getting older now, too, and I had heard about a special litter during the pandemic and thought, well, let’s take another one. But then there were two siblings who could no longer be separated! One should actually go to France, that didn’t work with Corona, and well – then he just stayed with us.”

I couldn’t say no to that either.

“And: That was a really big gift. Now I have the two of them, like twins, who are incredibly closely connected. And they’re also really good for the big dogs. It’s so nice to see how they have each other as a pack – Yes, five is a bit much, but I enjoy seeing how they live together in their community and you have to say: We have the space for them too.”

The dogs seem to live in paradise with you, don’t they?

“I don’t expect anything from the dogs either. If you have greyhounds, you can’t expect anything anyway, they are stubborn, you can’t teach them everything either, but they are free – and I love that very much. I see absolute tenderness in them and conviviality.”
