Guild Wars 2 is clearly part of MMORPGs major players in the current video game landscape. It has attracted millions of curious people since its release on August 28, 2012 and was entitled to 3 paid extensions to renew its content, the last End of Dragons dating from the beginning of the year 2022 (it which is available from €29.99 on Amazon.co.uk).
However, it was only available until now from a dedicated client downloadable from the site ofArenaNet. However, the developers confirmed a few months ago that they wanted to bring the past title to free-to-play (with restrictions) in 2015 on Steam, a desire that finally materializes. Right in time for 10 years of Guild Wars 2, this one will be launched on the platform of Valve August 23, 2022. You can then download the game for free or get a Complete Collection including the 3 extensions and the Seasons 2 at 5.
On this occasion, several technical innovations and improvements to the gameplay for new players will also be introduced. And, of course, regardless of the client used to launch the game, the games will of course be shared by the entire community.
It’s time to tell your friends to update their Steam wishlists: we’re thrilled to announce that Guild Wars 2 will be available on Steam on August 23rd at 9:00 PM PST (12:00 PM PT)! This is something we’ve wanted to accomplish for a long time, and the game’s tenth anniversary marks the perfect opportunity to do so.
Steam players will be able to experience the base game of Guild Wars 2 for free (with the same restrictions as free accounts created on GuildWars2.com), with options to upgrade to Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, Guild Wars 2 : Path of Fire and Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons from launch day. We’ve taken your feedback into consideration to better communicate the Living World unlock to potential players, so we’re also creating a Complete Collection Pack that includes Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons and Living World Seasons 2-5 (Living World Season 1 being free to everyone).
The Complete Collection won’t be immediately available to players outside of Steam, but we’ll be working to add it to our web store and in-game store soon for players who have created their account on GuildWars2.com. (Note: Current Guild Wars 2 accounts cannot be linked to Steam, or vice versa. Visit our Knowledge Base for more information.) Additionally, we will make it clear on our Steam page that Living World Seasons must be purchased separately from extensions. No surprise, then.
To make the most of the launch on Steam, we’ve been working on improvements to the new player experience over the past few months. We’ve improved the leveling rate, updated the default options and keys to be more convenient, added several sets of new achievements that guide players to level 80, added a trial period of raptor mount as soon as players reach level 10 (which becomes a permanent unlock upon purchasing an expansion), adjusted level up rewards and boost to level 80, updated start content gameplay, such as world bosses, with redesigned mechanics and tutorials, simplified dungeon currencies and improved their rewards, easier access to raid content, added accessibility options, improved player experience in instances in Story Mode, revamped fractal instabilities, improved raid and strike mission rewards and currencies, removed tedious mechanics like gear repair, fixed several long-standing bugs, and implemented DirectX11 to improve game performance. We also released the first three episodes of Living World Season 1, giving players a better understanding of the story as they embark on later content. The fourth episode will be released on September 13.
We’re happy to report that our stats indicate that these changes have had a big impact, and we’ll continue to make further improvements over the coming months as we study how the release on Steam unfolds. We’ll soon see a steady stream of new players coming into the game from Steam, so even the changes that take effect after launch will be beneficial. Overall, we’re happy with the balance we’ve found between the effort we’ve put into the new player experience and the effort we’ve put into developing upcoming content for our veteran players.
We’re really excited to be able to launch the game on Steam soon, and we hope you’ll help us shout it from the rooftops: tell your friends, family, neighbors, and of course your fellow gamers! It’s now or never to join the Guild Wars community.

Guild Wars 2 10th Anniversary Event
It wouldn’t be a real party if we didn’t also celebrate the community that has supported us all these years. When you log in on August 23, you’ll find a whole host of new achievements to complete, which will guide you through a journey to discover the best Guild Wars 2 has to offer: world bosses, Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons, Living World, World vs. World, Player vs. Player and more. Completing these tasks will earn you Proofs of Legend, which you can exchange for the new Decade Armor Set.
These achievements are permanent additions to the game, so our new friends from Steam will be able to complete them by exploring Tyria at their own pace.
A 30% bonus to Karma, Magic Discovery, and PvP and WvW Reward Track Progress will be active for one week starting August 23.
As tradition dictates, we’re also going to be running lots of specials in the Gem Store to celebrate the anniversary, and maybe even some freebies to get (spoiler: mount skin).
Twitch Drops
You’ll soon be able to link your Twitch account to your Guild Wars 2 account to earn rewards for watching a Twitch channel that streams Guild Wars 2 content on Twitch! Join any Twitch livestream for which Twitch drops are enabled between August 23 at 9:00 p.m. PT (12:00 a.m. PT) and August 29 at 8:59 a.m. ) to get transmutation charges, buffs, a miniature, a shimmering purple mask, and your choice of classic Guild Wars 2 character outfit.
Members of the ArenaNet Partner Program will release various types of content during the week of the Steam launch and the tenth anniversary (and beyond) to showcase all facets of Guild Wars 2: narrative content, raids, missions attack, fractals, Player versus Player, World versus World and more. Everyone can find something interesting there.

A call to arms
When Guild Wars 2 hits Steam on August 23, a wave of new players will enter Tyria for the first time, and those players will be looking for new friends and communities to call home. We hope our veteran players will join us in welcoming these new players to our world with open arms. Together we are stronger !
After the tenth anniversary and launch on Steam, we still have a lot of exciting plans ahead. Here are some of the most important:
- The return of the last two episodes of Living World Season 1 (along with a new strike mission and its challenge mode);
- A new place and its history to discover in Cantha;
- World vs. World updates, including world restructuring and alliances.
Not to mention that our next expansion is in early development! Now is the best time to play Guild Wars 2.
