The beIN Sports channel announced on Tuesday that it had obtained by court order the blocking of addresses and fraudulent sites illegally offering the live broadcast of sports matches, such as the African Cup of Nations (CAN) currently.

This decision rendered Thursday by the Paris court is a first in France, inaugurating the new legislative framework for the fight against the piracy of sports content.

“It concretely records the entry into force of the new legal system aimed at simplifying and accelerating the blocking and inaccessibility of fraudulent sites and/or addresses, broadcasting illegal content via streaming or IPTV” (reception mode by internet), welcomed in a press release Caroline Guenneteau, deputy general secretary of beIN Media Group.

According to this law adopted at the end of September, the holders of rights to broadcast sporting events now have the possibility of acting in summary proceedings to obtain the blocking or delisting of pirate sites which seriously harm them.

About twenty sites and addresses known to illegally retransmit sporting content and events are affected by this decision, Caroline Guenneteau told AFP, without disclosing names.

Their blocking, implemented in the process by internet service providers (ISPs), occurs “at a time when beIN Sports France is broadcasting exclusively for its subscribers the entire TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, one of the most watched competitions in the world and historically very pirated”, underlines the chain.

The regulator, the Communication and Digital Regulatory Authority (Arcom), “will now have the power to ask ISPs to block any new site – identified from the decision – illegally broadcasting live”, adds beIN Sports .

The next step for the sports channel “will be to determine, in consultation with all the stakeholders and the Arcom, the methods allowing us to optimize in the coming weeks the deadlines for applying the measures to block the identified sites and any mirror sites. “, concluded Caroline Guenneteau, quoted in a press release.
