Hail and storm – violent storms in Lower Austria: fire brigades in action

In Lower Austria, the fire brigades were again challenged by storms on Sunday evening. According to Franz Resperger, the regional command recorded around 50 deployment sites. The Amstetten district and the Waldviertel were considered hotspots. Storm squalls in particular caused problems. Trees, scaffolding and billboards fell over, and house roofs were covered.

In the Gmünd district, a tree crashed onto the overhead line of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. According to Resperger, the live wire hung “only a few centimeters above a car occupied by three people”. The occupants were released from the car and remained uninjured. The ÖBB reported a storm-related closure on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Gmünd and Vitis (Waidhofen ad Thaya district). A replacement rail service was set up.

Heavy hail fell in the Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt districts. The violent storm also caused problems in many places. Scaffolding and billboards fell over, and house roofs were covered. Towards evening the thunderstorm cell weakened and moved on towards Vienna.
