Shiny, repaired and nourished hair overnight – hair slugging is the latest trend hitting the web. But what is behind the somewhat irritating term?

“Hair slugging” – you can’t really translate the trend that’s currently doing the rounds on TikTok. It is based on the English term “slug”, i.e. “nudibranch”. It doesn’t really make you any smarter, but you can probably guess that it’s going to get slimy. What is the trend that promises magically beautiful hair overnight?

Hair slugging is doing the rounds

The hair trend originally came from a skin beauty hack. With “skin slugging”, the face is rubbed with a particularly rich Vaseline overnight. In the morning, the skin should appear particularly beautiful, radiant and nourished. This should work for the hair as well. TikTok user Monique Rapier was the first to try the technique on her hair — and she loved it. There are now many thousands of imitators who are also convinced of “hair slugging”.

That’s how it’s done

For “Hair Slugging” you need a hair oil – for thick hair you can use a particularly rich one, for less thick hair a lighter oil is suitable. You will also need an old sock or other piece of fabric and a hair tie. Now you can decide if you want to work all your hair or just the ends. Before you go to bed, rub your hair with hair oil – either all your hair or just the ends – tuck the braid into a sock and secure it with a hair tie at the top. If you want to work all your hair, it’s a good idea to apply a hair mask over the oil. You wash it off in the morning. With a light hair oil on the ends, you don’t have to wash anything out.

The aim of the method is less frizzy hair that is well-nourished and regenerated.

For whom is “Hair Slugging” suitable?

The technique is suitable for those who suffer from very dry, frizzy hair that is in dire need of moisture. For everyone else, overuse of products is likely to result in hair becoming weighed down with unnecessary build-up. The “Hair Slugging” method per se is rather unsuitable for fine hair, as it makes the hair even heavier, hangs even flatter and thus appears even finer.
