Half-full classrooms – Salzburg’s teachers have to fix it now

Despite lockdowns, around half of Salzburg’s students started their way to school as usual on Monday. Some classes are almost complete, but in some places they have switched to home instruction due to insufficient attendance at home. How well the lessons actually work depends on the teacher.

“Nothing can be planned at the moment, because the numbers can always change,” says Klaus Schneider, director of the Academic Gymnasium. About half of the students came on Monday, the others are in home schooling. “It’s totally different in the classes. I have classes where only three students came and some who are almost completely here, ”he says. Six classes have been completely converted to home-schooling due to the small number of students. How it works – whether with hybrid lessons, learning packages or via online platforms – is up to each teacher. In the sports middle school in Seekirchen, a little more than half of the students were in class on Monday. “It’s going well so far, but the balancing act between classroom and home lessons is very difficult,” says director Anita Spitzer. In the BG Hallein, almost 50 of the 700 students are currently infected with Corona. The school building was accordingly empty. Home learning packages for the very little ones in Lungau With the very little ones, who now also have to wear mouth and nose protection, the first day of school in lockdown was quite relaxed, at least in the St. Michael elementary school. Three quarters of the elementary school students came to class here. For the rest, the teachers put together new learning packages every week.
