This is one of the events of October at Netflix: the new production by Guillermo del Toro, director of the Pan’s Labyrinth and of The Shape of Water, features eight deliciously horrifying stories. A gothic anthology that mixes ghosts, monsters and deep fears, in the spirit of scary stories that we told ourselves as children. At the helm, Frenchman Alexandre Aja delivers inspired horror sequences, and an effective and ideal feature film for Halloween.

The Terror

The story of a dangerous journey of the British Royal Navy to the Arctic in 1845. The expedition, consisting of the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, finds itself stuck in the ice off King William Island. The sailors will try to survive between the cold, the disease and the attacks of a strange creature.

Based on a true story, the first season of The Terror mixes historical narrative, closed-door thriller and fantastic horror film, and delivers a breathless cocktail of excellent quality. In addition to its British cast made up of big names (Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, Ciaran Hinds), the series has a visually sublime production, and offers a plot between horror and thriller. If the second season is less interesting, the first remains a must-see of terror.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets, one of the nice surprises of last year, will bring back fond memories to fans of slashers and slaughtered teenagers. But the series does not stop there, and offers a narrative structure with two temporalities, one in 1996, the other in 2021, which dialogue and advance a mysterious story of plane crash and cannibalism. A fine achievement of gore horror, knife-edge tension and finely written characters, Yellowjackets is also worth the detour for its quality female cast.

The Descent

Right in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains, six young women meet for a caving expedition. Suddenly, a landslide blocks the way back. As they try to find another way out, they realize they are not alone underground…

Taking place almost entirely in the depths of American caves, this film is a little classic of the 2000s, distilling its horror through our most basic fears, such as claustrophobia or darkness. Directed by Neil Marshall (dog soldiers, Doomsday), The Descent handles its monsters and its absurd folklore with brilliance for a terrifying result. And you can’t quickly get away from the heroines’ struggle for survival in this suffocating maze of cellars.
