Like Princess Diana or Princess Kate before her: Hannah Waddingham was named godmother of a cruise ship.

Special honor for Hannah Waddingham (49): The “Ted Lasso” actress was named godmother of a cruise ship. In this case it is the Sun Princess, the new one Princess Cruise Line ship. Her tasks include, among other things, the christening of the boat. The Sun Princess was launched in February 2024.

“I couldn’t believe I was asked to be a godmother as I grew up around ships all my life and my grandfather was in the navy in the Atlantic convoy,” the Brit told the “People” magazine. “Being asked to take part in this beautiful honor is one of those pinch-yourself moments,” she continued.

Because Hannah Waddingham is following in big footsteps. The honor of becoming the godmother of a ship in the Princess Cruise fleet has been bestowed upon great British names. In 1984, Princess Diana (1961-1997) was the godmother of the Royal Princess, who is no longer used today. She was followed in 2013 by Princess Kate (42), who also named a ship called the Royal Princess.

Audrey Hepburn to “Dream Ship” stars as godparents

Not only real, but also showbiz nobility served as a lucky charm for the British-American company’s cruise ships. Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) and Sophia Loren (89) also brandished champagne bottles. In 1991 it was the turn of politician Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013), a year after she left office as Prime Minister.

What Hannah Waddingham doesn’t mention: But it’s not always the big world that gets to christen Princess Cruise ships. There were also winners of the British edition of “The Bachelor” or actors from the kitsch series “Love Boat”. After all, it was the US template for the German “dream ship” that really made the cruise company famous.

Hannah Waddingham has been active on stage and in front of the camera for decades. She became known in Germany primarily with the Apple football comedy “Ted Lasso”. She won an Emmy for the role, among other things. In 2023 she was also part of the presenting team for the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool.
