Hate-watching: why do we continue to watch a series we hate?

Do you continue to watch a series that you no longer like? Or even hate it? Don’t panic, it’s the guilty pleasure of all series fans! This happens to a lot of people and this phenomenon is called hate-watching.

Netflix

Series fans have a very strong relationship with the series they watch since they take up more and more space in our lives and require a certain investment depending on the number of episodes and seasons.

So when some people start a series, they may feel obliged or want to go to the end and know the final outcome. When the quality of the series is always there throughout the seasons, then the pleasure is intact.

What is hate-watching?

But when their favorite series is only a shadow of itself or is going around in circles, it is more difficult to continue watching and get some satisfaction from it. And series fans do not fail to let it be known on social networks. And yet, the most reckless continue to watch series that they sometimes begin to hate.

Netflix

If this is your case, rest assured, you are not alone! And this phenomenon has a name: hate-watching. This means that we feel a certain guilty pleasure when we watch a film or series that we hate (and we don’t hold back from saying it!).

Riverdale, Emily in Paris, Elite…

Many series have their share of haters, especially historical series like The Walking Dead, which has lost its splendor over the years. Among the other completed fictions, we note Riverdale, which has also suffered a lot of criticism, particularly for its increasingly bizarre and incoherent plots until its final outcome.

As for more recent fictions still in progress, we stand out Emily in Paris, which in addition to being criticized for its plot and its quality, is especially criticized for its clichés on France and Paris, as in season 3.

Some series are highly criticized and yet they are widely watched, which is totally paradoxical, as is the case for the Spanish fiction Élite. It is the longest series in Netflix history with 8 seasons (the eighth was announced as the last), and it is in each season in the top views of the platform.

“Worse and worse”

However, Internet users are far from being kind to Élite, since they share their frustration on social networks, with comments and strong opinions: “It was better before“, “Worse and worse“, “the season too many” or “the worst season“, during season 6, for example.

And it’s the same thing for season 7 of the Spanish series, available for a few days on the platform. Although Internet users note the intention to address mental health through the character of Omar, they continue to criticize Élite.

However, at the time of writing, Spanish fiction has risen to first place in the platform’s top views and its popularity is still intact, despite numerous criticisms. Hate-watching still has a bright future ahead of it!
