The European Football Championship in Germany is no reason to be happy for the catering industry. Most companies do not expect any economic effects from the tournament. However, things look different in the ten venues.

Almost a month before the start of the European Football Championship in Germany, the majority of businesses in the catering and hotel industries do not expect any economic effects from the major event. In relation to the overall industry, only 15.5 percent of the hospitality industry expects positive effects, as the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) announced in Berlin. Things look different in the venues.

Overall, around three quarters of the hospitality companies surveyed do not expect more guests or higher sales as a result of the tournament. “A major event like the European Championships can also partially displace regular business,” explained Dehoga President Guido Zöllick.

Fewer or shorter congresses are taking place and there are also fewer business travelers. Nevertheless, according to Dehoga, the industry is fundamentally looking forward to the coming month. Although not all hosts benefited directly from the major event, it could nevertheless contribute to improving the mood in the country and strengthening Germany as a tourism location.

In contrast to the entire industry, significantly more restaurateurs, hoteliers and caterers in the ten venues expect positive effects (46.3 percent). 42.3 percent expect more guests during the European Championships and 39 percent hope for an increase in sales, according to the survey.

The city and conference hotels as well as the drinks-focused gastronomy are also in a better mood than average. Almost every third company expects positive effects here. According to Dehoga, 1,340 hospitality businesses from all over Germany took part in the survey between the end of April and mid-May.
