Some French people will have difficulty receiving their Uber Eats order during this first weekend of December, the fault of an algorithmic change which is pushing delivery people to strike.

For several weeks, the union organizations representing platform delivery workers have been pushing for a massive mobilization for the weekend of December 2 and 3, 2023. This Saturday and Sunday, workers from the Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Stuart services could number in the thousands. stop deliveries, to demonstrate everywhere in France. In question ? A new algorithm that would lower their remuneration.

Uber Eats delivery drivers demonstrate throughout France

The situation of delivery people on platforms like Uber Eats is not the easiest, and the main stakeholders, who carry out an activity that is still very precarious and poorly protected, have decided to make it known this weekend.

From Paris to Marseille, via Lyon, Lille, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Nice, Bordeaux, Montpellier and even Metz and even as far as Reunion Island, delivery people are demonstrating all over France this Saturday, November 2. They must parade in symbolic places, such as Stalingrad in Paris or the Place de la Victoire in Bordeaux, but also in front of restaurants, often McDonald’s.

The processions of delivery men want to make their voices heard on the delicate subject of remuneration. And for good reason: in addition to inflation, meal delivery workers have, according to their representatives, been harmed since the implementation of a new shopping calculation algorithm at the beginning of November.

Workers rail against new algorithm that would plunge their pay

The new algorithm was indeed the trigger for the strike of cyclists and motorcyclists. This, which calculates the amount paid per trip, has been modified to no longer be based on mileage, but on terms that are still unclear, having led to a reduction in the remuneration of delivery people contested by Uber Eats.

Behind the Uber, Stuart and Deliveroo delivery drivers, who are not paid when they stop work to take a few days of “vacation”, we find the CGT, Union-Indépendants and SUD, who tried to negotiate with the platforms on various occasions, but obviously without success.

The delivery workers, who with the unions denounce what they call a “ modern slavery », take advantage of this weekend to shed light on their situation, they who can still be removed from the application too easily (order refusal, low activity). In the meantime, Uber Eats says it has made an effort, by increasing the minimum hourly income from 11.75 euros to 14 euros. But all this is, at this stage, only provisional.
