When you were younger, in the absence of a Game Boy console, did you have a Game Gear? The following should bring back some lovely memories.
At the very beginning of the 1990s, the “ console war » rages between Nintendo and SEGA. In addition to the battle on the home console front, the two Japanese giants will also begin a new fight in the portable console market. On one side, Nintendo and its small Game Boy console, on the other SEGA and its Game Gear, launched in 1990, a year after the competition.
SEGA’s Game Gear modernized
In 2023, (re)playing your childhood games on the original consoles can quickly become (very) expensive… Likewise, even though the reliability of our old consoles is exemplary, managing to get your hands on a console of yesteryear perfectly functional becomes more and more delicate, especially when it comes to the SEGA Game Gear.
Indeed, the one that made your parents cry 30 years ago for its (over)consumption of batteries often requires a little makeover today, in order to find sound and image worthy of the name. On Jeff Geerling’s side, we decided to go further, by adding a Raspberry Pi to the Game Gear.
Who put a Raspberry in my Game Gear?
The purists will no doubt scream, but rather than repairing his Game Gear, this modding specialist preferred to transform it, by integrating a Raspberry Pi, without obviously forgetting the associated emulator: RetroPie.
So of course, the emulator makes loading games much easier and offers various advantages, but on the other hand, it is now impossible to use the original Game Gear cartridges.
The modder also took care to modify the shell of the Sega Game Gear, in order to include a total of four buttons (compared to two on the original model), without forgetting to swap the original screen for a modern screen.
Emulator requires, the Game Gear designed by Jeff Geerling is also able to play Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Super Nintendo… and Game Boy games. And we have to admit that seeing the first Super Mario Land shot on Game Gear is a little unsettling.
A true chameleon, the Nintendo Switch has given rise to many vocations and, since its release, the number of portable consoles has exploded. Whatever your desires, there is sure to be a model for you!
