‘He has good ideas’: The X-Files creator gives his blessing to the new series

Announced last year, the cult series “X-Files” will be entitled to a reboot under the leadership of Ryan Coogler (Creed, Black Panther). And Chris Carter, the creator of the original series, says he will only participate as a “cheerleader.”

It was an announcement that took everyone by surprise in 2023: the cult series Black Panther.

And Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files with Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), has given his blessing to Ryan Coogler, for his new iteration still without official title.

Carter Approved

It was Chris Carter himself who revealed at the time that Ryan Coogler was working on such a project, but it was not clear whether it was a reboot, another revival, a sequel or something else.

He then declared that the project was to “relaunch The X-Files with a diverse cast“. Carter will not be involved in the series, his last involvement having been the two-season revival on Fox from 2016 to 2018.

Addressing The Wrap This week, Chris Carter said of the new series:

I am honored that they came to me and asked, not for my permission, but for my blessing. I’m curious. This isn’t the easiest series to write due to the subject matter. It’s not like Law & Order (New York District in France, editor’s note), where we have the crime of the week. You have to imagine ‘what would happen if’ and ‘what would happen if’ is often difficult to approach“.

He will not be involved in the project, “only as a cheerleader” he said mischievously. “I’m not supposed to talk about it, according to Disney. But yes, I had a conversation with him. And he has good ideas.

A real challenge

One thing the show will have the difficult task of doing is recapture the chemistry between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson that Carter says was the key to its success: “Without this relationship and without the actors who played Mulder and Scully, the series would not have had the success it did.

But don’t expect the original cast to return, Gillian Anderson, in particular. She says the end of the revival ended with “such an unfortunate note“and that she would only come back if there was”a whole new team of writers and that the baton needed to be passed on to make it feel fresh and progressive“.

So be patient to find out the new distribution!
