Head-on at the Fernpass – overtaking maneuver causes four injuries, some of them seriously

Because he wanted to overtake despite the ban, a Slovak (24) caused a serious traffic accident on the Tyrolean Fernpassstraße on Monday morning. Four people had to be taken to the hospital, some seriously injured. In the course of the accident recording, another careless driver caused a dicey situation.

The 24-year-old driver, who still had two Slovakian passengers (24 and 25) in the car, started an overtaking maneuver on the B179 near Biberwier (Tyrolean district of Reutte) at around 11:20 a.m. – despite the restricted line and overtaking ban. He crashed head-on into an oncoming car in which a 46-year-old local was sitting. His vehicle rolled over several times before coming to a stop on the road. The Slovakian’s car spun and then also came to a standstill. The 46-year-old Austrian was injured in the accident and the emergency helicopter took him to the hospital in Reutte. A second helicopter took the 24-year-old passenger in the other car to the clinic in Innsbruck, while the second passenger and the driver were taken to the hospital in Reutte by ambulance. All four injured were hospitalized. Despite the lock, the limousine drove through the scene of the accident. During the accident recording, the B179 was completely blocked in both directions for around 90 minutes, and local diversions were set up. Nevertheless, just a few minutes after the accident, a limousine with a German license plate drove past the scene of the accident. “It almost came to a collision with a passer-by,” says the police. Although the traffic light was red, the car then drove into the Lermoos tunnel. The police are now asking for the help of witnesses in order to be able to investigate the unknown driver. Useful information should be provided to the Lermoos Police Inspectorate (059133 7154).
