Heavy Easter traffic – 15 kilometers – traffic jam in front of the Gotthard is increasing – News

  • The return traffic after the Easter holidays causes a kilometer-long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard south portal.
  • Cars are currently backing up on the Ticino side for 15 kilometers of the A2 motorway.
  • The Viasuisse transport service expects the peak of the wave of return journeys to be in the evening.

The Easter return traffic in Ticino had already come to a standstill in the morning in front of the Gotthard tunnel. Cars are now backed up between Faido and Airolo over a distance of 15 kilometers.

Some of the holidaymakers had already started their return journey on Sunday. There was also a traffic jam in the afternoon, which at times grew to up to seven kilometers. Due to the Easter holidays, Viasuisse expected traffic jams and waiting times again and again during the week.

Return journey traffic jam before the Gotthard on Easter Monday

At the beginning of Easter this year, there was a huge traffic jam on Good Friday in the south. The sheet metal snake in front of the Gotthard north portal in Göschenen (UR) grew at times to a length of 22 kilometers. The waiting time to get through was three and a half hours. Only at Easter 1998 was the tin snake longer at 25 kilometers due to the onset of winter.

No Easter jam during pandemic

In the last two Corona years, the traffic jams had become rarer. In 2020, the authorities had generally advised against traveling to the southern canton due to the tense corona situation in Ticino, and the Easter traffic jam had not materialized at all. Traffic jams were recorded in 2021, but to a comparatively small extent.
