In Ticino, summery weather is tempting during the Easter days. On Saturday, SRF Meteo expects 26 degrees in places. Temperatures are likely to drop slightly on Sunday and Monday, despite the sunshine.

Record high traffic on Wednesday

On Wednesday afternoon, cars had been backed up for ten kilometers – longer than they had in seven years. The Easter traffic jam between Erstfeld UR and Göschenen UR had expanded in the course of the morning. At 10:30 a.m. the column was still four kilometers long, at 1 p.m. it was nine kilometers. At 2:00 p.m., he reached the provisional high of ten kilometers.

This number represents a record, wrote the traffic information service Viasuisse. In the past seven years, the traffic jams in front of the Gotthard tunnel on the Wednesday before Easter would never have been more than seven kilometers.

Willing to travel again

According to the Federal Roads Office (Astra), people’s desire to travel increased again after the corona-related restrictions. They therefore predicted traffic jams in front of the north portal of the Gotthard road tunnel in the run-up to the holidays.

On the return trip to the north, Viasuisse expected the busiest traffic in front of the Gotthard south portal for Easter Monday between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. In order to avoid long waiting times, Viasuisse advised to drive through the Gotthard tunnel early in the morning or in the evening after 10 p.m.
