Heavy rain and hail – storms caused considerable damage

The Burgenland fire brigades had to move out more than 30 times on Tuesday afternoon. Streets and basements were flooded, especially in southern Burgenland. A heavy hailstorm broke out in the Mattersburg district.

On Tuesday afternoon, the first severe thunderstorms of the year raged over Austria with hail, heavy rain and sometimes stormy winds. In Burgenland, the regions in the south and in the district of Mattersburg were particularly badly damaged. Mario Winkler, press spokesman for the Austrian hail insurance company, estimates the damage to agriculture at around 300,000 euros. The storm also hit several communities in the Mattersburg district, and the amount of water was too much for the fields and roads. Nine fire departments with a total of over 100 members and around 20 vehicles went out to clear the streets, remove the sludge and pump out cellars. In Mattersburg and Walbersdorf there were enormous amounts of mud on the streets. Municipal workers and police were also busy with roadblocks and cleaning up. The cross-site work went smoothly.
