Heavy rainfall – Valais warns of flooding: situation in the Matter Valley tense – News

  • In Valais, the Rhone and its tributaries are threatening to overflow their banks due to flooding.
  • The cantonal authorities and the information platform Alertswiss have warned of possible flooding.
  • The situation in the Matter Valley is particularly tense, as local media reports.

The flow of the Rhone has been at a high level since the morning and is likely to continue to rise. The authorities expect the Rhone to reach its peak by late afternoon or evening.

According to the warning, flooding and mudslides may also occur in the tributaries. The reason for the flooding is a rain and thunderstorm front that has been moving over the Valais since Thursday. Added to this is melting snow and water-saturated soil. Several roads in the canton are closed.

Zermatt cut off from the outside world

The situation is particularly precarious in the Matter Valley at the moment. The situation is difficult to assess and the forecasts are very unstable, those responsible in Zermatt told the “Walliser Bote”. The schools in Zermatt and Täsch remain closed. In addition, the municipality of Täsch has “evacuated” a campsite as a precaution, as the “Walliser Bote” reports. Videos show that the Vispa has partially overflowed its banks.

Zermatt is cut off from the outside world due to a landslide. This was reported by the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway on X. The reason is the risk of flooding. Replacement buses are running between Visp and Täsch. There is currently no way to travel to Zermatt.

The Canton of Valais recommends not approaching waterways, not parking on bridges, restricting freedom of movement and refraining from filming or photographing storm events.
