At temperatures of minus 19 degrees, the cross-country skiers are sent relentlessly onto the trails; the World Cup organizers in Kuusamo, Finland, show no mercy. A German’s eyes freeze, others have hypothermic toes. It hits a Swede really hard.

The Swedish cross-country skier Calle Halfvarsson suffered particularly badly at the World Cup in the “refrigerator” of Kuusamo. His “snorre” was frozen, the two-time relay runner-up world champion told the newspaper “Expressen” and pointed to his genitals: “It hurts so damn much. It’s terrible.”

The cross-country skiers were put to a tough test on Sunday at 19 degrees below freezing in Finland. The mishap had already happened to Halfvarsson years ago. “It’s lucky that I’m having my second child soon, because it will be difficult in the future if I continue like this,” said the 34-year-old and laughed.

After 50 minutes, he still finished the 20-kilometer race in 18th place, making him the best Swede. He then lay in a tent for ten minutes to warm up his penis. Jan Thomas Jenssen from Norway won the race, completely unexpectedly; one of his numerous successful compatriots had been expected.

The German cross-country skiers also suffered from the bitter cold on Sunday. “On some laps my vision was blurry because my eyes were frozen – even with glasses. My optician will hate me,” said Lucas Bögl. His toes also suffered despite foot warmers.

According to the regulations of the world association FIS, competitions can only take place if it is not colder than minus 20 degrees. But none of the DSV starters wanted to use the cold as an excuse. Katharina Hennig also suffered from the temperatures. “In the future, Katha should wear thicker overshoes. That won’t happen to her again,” said national coach Peter Schlickenrieder. Olympic champion Hennig didn’t get past 27th place over 10 kilometers.

After her eighth place, Hennig’s teammate Victoria Carl just wanted to “go to the sauna”, Pia Fink complained about stiff legs: “I couldn’t move well anymore.” Florian Notz explained that he felt “a bit dizzy” in the second half of the race.
