Of course, many things don’t work without advertising. As a dinghy for the Internet world, this newsletter is ad-free. But we cross-finance it through our homepage, where advertising is placed. If you don’t want to see them, there is also a payment model. This is how most streaming services operate.

But for some time now, Netflix, Disney+ and Co. have had another variant. Here you pay a monthly subscription fee and still have to live with advertising. In return, the monthly subscription costs decrease. The Disney+ subscription only costs me 5.99 euros per month instead of 8.99 euros per month.

The Percy Jackson Curse

So I knew what I was getting myself into, namely advertising. What I didn’t know: it comes relatively often and it’s always the same advertising clips. Most of the time it’s self-promotion for Disney+ or a Disney+ exclusive series if it’s called Percy Jackson. Maybe it’s just me, but on a typical series or movie night with Disney+, I feel like I’m presented with Percy Jackson commercials five times and a Disney+ self-promotional clip five times. Huh? Do I have to understand that?

Is it really possible that no one else wants to advertise on the platform? Not a car manufacturer, not a detergent-please-don’t-store-near-children clip, not a soft drink manufacturer. No insurer? Where are you all hiding? Can’t you finally release me from the Percy Jackson curse?

“Welcome, Percy Jackson…” – I can now hear the two constantly repeating clips. However, I noticed something else. Disney always arranges these clips slightly differently. Sometimes a scene appears in the middle, sometimes towards the end. Just like a DJ who tries again and again to conjure up something new and different sounding from the same record. There can only be two reasons for this strange advertising tactic:

1.) Disney actually fails to attract new advertisers who want to advertise on the platform. I don’t think that’s realistic. Because very rarely, but regularly, new advertising gets lost on Disney+.

2.) Disney does this on purpose. At some point I’ll probably be so annoyed by the repetitive advertising that I’ll give up and switch to the full-price subscription. As a Disney+ customer, I feel like a criminal being interrogated, tied to the bed and having water dripped down the tip of his nose for hours.

I’ll probably just cancel and switch to Amazon Prime. Although: It shouldn’t be any better there. Or to Netflix. Naaah. YouTube Premium would still be an option. I’ll think about it. Oh, Percy…

George Lucas’ first “Star Wars” film was released in cinemas in 1977. The then young director shot the film in Death Valley, California, and in Tunisia. Shooting the desert planet Tatooine required a real desert.

The desert area where Lucas filmed is on the border with Libya. Tunisia and Libya share a 460-kilometer-long border and the situation was extremely tense in the 1970s. Chip in the brain and flying umbrellas

It must be this future that we live in and that we have always looked up to with such anticipation in the past. As a child (and later at festivals) I often dreamed of flying umbrellas. These would just always float above your head, you wouldn’t have to hold on to them and they would follow you everywhere. There is now (almost)!
