Henry Maske reveals: His daily training is torture for him. However, it helps him to remain “supple” even as he gets older.

Even former professional athletes sometimes have to drag themselves to sport. At least that’s how Henry Maske (60) feels explained in the “3nach9” discussion group with Judith Rakers (48) and Giovanni di Lorenzo (64). Accordingly, he still trains regularly, but also admitted: “Let’s be honest – training is no fun.”

“Training is to some extent torture”

His sports plan includes “all the things I used to do – apart from boxing,” says Maske. He would do running, strength training, rowing and cycling almost every day. However, he won’t be sad when the sport ends again. “Training is to some extent torture,” said the ex-athlete. And: “There are nicer things that are fun.”

His role model Max Schmeling (1905-2005) also serves as motivation for him: The boxing legend trained well into his old age and only stopped jumping rope at the age of 91, reports Maske: “He kept something that always made him strong did, even if he no longer had to.” Maske is apparently rewarded for his perseverance with a perfectly fit, healthy body. “I have a back too, but I do something to ensure that my back stays still and stays supple.”

Henry Maske: “Friends, you should have boxed”

Not all former professional athletes are doing so well, as Maske also revealed. Recently he had the opportunity to stand with some other successful athletes in his age group. “Health has been challenged over the years,” stated Maske. And commented on it with the sentence: “Friends, you should have boxed.”

Henry Maske is often considered one of the most successful German boxers of all time. He became a prominent figure in German sport in the 1990s, gave boxing a real boom and also achieved international recognition. He is known for his career as a light heavyweight, winning numerous titles including the IBF world title.
