Evelyn Thomsen, 10, found out she was suffering from cancer after her dog, Hazel, jumped onto her lap.
Three in a million people suffer from it every year in France. 10 years old, Evelyn Thomsen has Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that is particularly devastating. And without her little dog, the little girl could have diagnosed him too late. It is indeed while playing with the latter that the little girl discovered the first symptom of her illness. “What happened was our dog, who was six months old, jumped on Evelyn’s lap and it hurt, much more than it should have., Lisa Reimer, Evelyn’s mother, tells the Liverpool Echo. When we looked, there was swelling on his calf. It was a little weird so we called 911 and were told to put ice on it. It didn’t change anything so we went to see a general practitioner. This one said ‘That doesn’t look normal. “
On the advice of the GP, Evelyn’s parents drove her to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. In the emergency room, the girl was taken in very seriously. “When we were in the ER I was a little embarrassed, happy that we were taken care of so quickly but some people had much bigger injuries and I thought Evelyn had something minor, I didn’t. wasn’t sure we needed to be there. On the day of her MRI she was with her dad and I was waiting at home because we had to leave for the weekend. She was admitted at 10 hours and I thought she would be home around noon. “
“She showed incredible resilience”
Sadly, Evelyn’s hospital stay dragged on. His MRI results revealed the presence of a vascularized tumor on his calf and a second in his lung. In seven months, the girl had 14 chemotherapy sessions at Alder Hey Hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Center in Birkenhead and Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where she underwent surgery. “She has shown incredible resilience, disappointment after disappointment, underlines his mother. She saw her friends grow up and do things that she couldn’t do. It was very hard not to be able to see your friends, not to look like everyone else, to feel tired. But she never complained. “
Today, the little girl continues her radiotherapy treatment but her two tumors have completely disappeared. Now she can’t wait to go to the theater with her parents and get back to as normal a life as possible.
