She’s only 24, has won numerous awards, raises her voice for good and counts the Obamas among her fans: R&B star HER
“If you don’t stand up for something, you fall for everything” – that’s just one of many life mantras that may have helped the R&B artist HER (24) to succeed. What she stands for: self-confidence, sincerity and openness.
Her stage name expresses another attitude towards life. It means “Having Everything Revealed” and celebrates dealing openly with one’s own vulnerability as a strength. According to the artist, who was recently announced as L’Oréal Paris’ new international brand ambassador, her music is about showing oneself vulnerable and feeling comfortable with it.
A voice of change
HER also raises her voice to fight for change and good. In 2021 she wrote the protest song “I Can’t Breathe” in response to the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Her song “Fight For You” from the film “Judas and the Black Messiah” about the Black Panthers in the 1960s won her an Oscar for the best film song. “We have the responsibility and the opportunity to tell the truth,” she said in her acceptance speech. And HER has already arrived at Michelle (57) and Barack Obama (60). Her song “Change” is on the soundtrack of the Obama series “We The People”.
The new ambassador from L’Oréal Paris is also committed to feminism – above all, she wants to encourage women to be themselves. She confidently interprets the advertising slogan “I’m worth it”: “Discovering my passion and concentrating entirely on my path made me understand my goal. This path often has ups and downs, but no matter what happens, it will be I always realized that I was worth it. And my parents were very supportive from a young age.”
Successful career
It was clear early on that Gabriella Wilson, as her real name is, belongs in the limelight. Her first TV appearance at 10, a contract with the RCA label at 14, her first EP at 19, for which she received praise from colleagues like Alicia Keys (40) and colleagues like Bryson Tiller (29). The brief attempt to hide their true identity behind the abbreviation HER quickly failed – their music was already too well known and unique.
Her self-titled debut album in 2017 did the rest: going platinum, raving critics, five Grammy nominations, two of which she won. And the success story is still going on: Your current album “Back Of My Mind” has been nominated for eight Grammys in 2022, including in the top categories “Song of the Year” and “Album of the Year”.
Even more important than prices
Today, the California-born musician is still a very young 24 years old. It is clear to HER that she is just at the beginning of her already impressive career. And also that there is something more important: “I’m proud of the path I’ve taken and of course my Grammys and Oscars, but my greatest pride is developing into the personality I’m becoming.”
