Here are the most profitable and popular games on Steam in 2023

The time to take stock of the year 2023 has come for Steam. Valve has just published the top games on its platform, both in terms of gross revenue and number of simultaneous players.

Whether you play on PC or Xbox or PlayStation consoles, you have probably received your personal retrospective of 2023. The time has come for Steam, still the market leader in computer video games, to draw up its own assessment of the titles that have made its mark year and that of the players. To do this, the platform offers several categories, themselves divided into several levels, where the games are displayed in random order and without exact numbers. We thus have platinum (1ᵉʳ to 12ᵉ), gold (13ᵉ to 24ᵉ), silver (25ᵉ to 50ᵉ) and bronze (51ᵉ to 100ᵉ).

AAA and F2P games still very profitable

First of all, Valve offers a ranking of the best games of the year according to their gross revenue. In platinum, few surprises, since boxes like Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077 (and especially its recent DLC), Hogwarts Legacy or Call of Duty are there. The GOTY Baldur’s Gate 3 is obviously there. Several free-to-play games, such as Counter Strike 2, Apex Legends, Dota 2, PUBG And Lost Ark have visibly heated up micro transactions. We will also note the presence in this top 12 of the game in early access Sons of the Forest.

Valve also offers a ranking that only includes the best sales figures for titles released in 2023. The firm bases this on their revenues two weeks after release. So, Street Fighter 6, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Resident Evil 4, FC24, Remnant II or Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon are making their mark. We will also note, despite the fairly negative criticism against them when they were released, the presence of Payday 3 and of Cities Skylines II.

Unbreakable games

The classification of games according to the number of people playing them simultaneously (at least 40,000) logically resembles the previous ones a little. The AAA and free-to-play mentioned above rule the roost, while F2P Goose Goose Duck makes a surprise appearance in platinum. In gold, classics like Team Fortress 2, GTA 5, Path of Exile And Rust have nothing to be ashamed of, just like the most recent Lethal Company And The Finals.

Finally, Valve has produced rankings for the highest-grossing games released from Early Access this year. Dave the Diver, Wartales, Against the Storm, Everspace 2, Marvel Snap or Disney Dreamlight Valley, in particular, are there.
