Sober and modern, that’s how we could define the dashboard that will equip the future Volvo EX90. We learn more about the screens, the interface (under Android Automotive) and the philosophy of the Sino-Swedish manufacturer.
The replacement for the huge XC90, the 7-seater SUV, is known, it is the EX90. But, ultimately, we know little about him, Volvo distills the information drop by drop. This time, we’re going to talk about the interior, and more specifically the dashboard.
Two screens
It is not so simple to design a dashboard of a modern car. Should the screen be vertical or horizontal? What size ? Should the instruments take place on a dedicated screen or a head-up display? The questions are legitimate, since these screens give access to all the functions of the car, but they can also disturb the driver.
For its part, Volvo, known above all for the importance it places on security, has decided to offer an approach which guarantees that only the most vital information is displayed or requested. The aim is for the driver to stay focused on the road. As is the case with many vehicles, important driving information is contained in an instrument cluster directly behind the steering wheel. Other information, such as navigation, media and everything related to connectivity, as well as various commands, are displayed on a large infotainment screen in the center console.

However, the information presented will depend on the situation. For example, different information will be displayed if you are parked or driving, or in the middle of a phone call. There will also be a context bar that will offer suggested actions best suited to the situation you find yourself in. In summary: Volvo promises you the right information at the right time. Volvo wants to modernize its interior, the Sino-Swedish group already uses Android Automotive, while ensuring that safety remains its priority. Difficult equation…
Google apps in the car
We notice that on the shared photos, the user interface is much more sober than the one we know. Volvo is moving away from the basic Android Automotive interface. The image of a shows the different blocks, including Google Maps and Spotify, on the central screen in a vertical position. The EX90 is known to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor for infotainment, with support for the Unreal Engine 3D engine.
Finally, we will notice that this console has few physical buttons. All that from the current XC90 has been removed in the EX90 along with the huge vents in the ventilation system. So it’s very understated.
Ride Pilot, the autopilot with Volvo sauce
Although autonomous driving is not available at launch, Volvo is developing a feature called Ride Pilot, the latter offers real journeys without intervention on motorways. Few details are given, it will probably be the subject of a future announcement. Remember, in passing, that we do not yet know the final appearance of the EX90, we know for the moment that the future electric SUV from Volvo will be equipped with two-way charging.
Either way, Volvo continues its pro-safety crusade. Previously, they massively communicated on a function to avoid forgetting baby on board. This EX90 can be ordered from 2023, the first deliveries are expected in 2024.
