Here is the future electric moped from Peugeot which will do better than the thermal version of the past

The 2024 Lyon 2 Wheel Show is an opportunity to discover the future of electric mobility at Peugeot through a concept that revisits the legendary 103 moped, available in three different versions: one 50 cc and two 125 cc. This is the Peugeot Project SPx.

It may not have escaped your notice: vintage is in fashion. Particularly here in France where the need to switch to electric mobility apparently arouses surges of nostalgia on the part of designers. A few days ago, it was the new electric Renault R5 that made its public debut at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, while it should be followed in the coming months by a reinterpretation of the famous 4L. We’re talking about electric cars here, but it seems that when we move on to two wheels, retro is also popular!

It obviously depends on the generations, but the name Peugeot 103 may not be completely foreign to you. And indeed, it is one of the most popular two-wheelers in the world, a moped that has been on the market for no less than 35 years. Time to put more than three million copies on the roads. Disappeared in 2007, the 103 returned to the forefront with the presentation at the Lyon 2 Wheel Show of a Peugeot Motorcycles concept called Project SPx which clearly refers to it. But in a rather… modern style!

Modern that recalls the old

No neo-retro here, but details reminiscent of the original model. The profile already has a colored fairing which allows you to more or less draw the lines of the initial “petroilette”. The saddle also, single-seater, reminiscent of that of the 2-stroke moped, except that here, it incorporates the “claw” rear lights, typical of Peugeot. Or even the front headlight. The color digital screen on the handlebars is nothing old!

In its press release which accompanies the first images of the model, Peugeot does not tell us much more about this SPx Project, other than that the frame is made of aluminum, that the number of parts has been restricted to a minimum or even that recycled materials are used in its design. We also notice in the photos above that the battery is removable. The compact format also ensures that the future production model will be dynamic. On the other hand, nothing on the mechanics… or almost!

Objective 2025

Indeed our colleagues from The Argus were able to speak with Éric Apode, general manager of Peugeot Motorcycles. And the manager confirmed that the future production version will be available in three variants: a 50 cm3 equivalent, a 125 cm3 equivalent, and a third version, still 125, but more sporty. It will therefore be better than the old 103 SP, limited to 50 cc.

We also learn that this concept is not just a designer’s delusion and that it will indeed lead to a production model. This should also take place in the Beaulieu Mandeure factory, in Doubs (25), which manufactured the 103 SP, and which produces different two-wheel Peugeot Motorcycles badges. When ? It seems that the production version of Project SPx could hit the roads before the end of 2025!
