A ceiling limits your basic pension when you liquidate your rights. For those retiring in 2024, the ceiling has been increased by more than 5%.
Regarding retirement, there is theoretically no maximum amount. Indeed, for former private sector employees, the Agirc-Arrco supplement does not provide for any maximum amount.
On the other hand, as for the basic regime, that is to say the general retirement insurance regime, the pension of which is paid by Cnav or Carsat, it contains a double system. On the one hand, the contributory minimum, that is to say the minimum pension for those who have had an entire career with a low salary, or who have had a so-called axed career.
A ceiling for the revalued basic pension
On the other hand, there is a ceiling which limits the basic pension at the time of retirement. Concretely, the basic pension of the general system cannot exceed 50% of the Social Security ceiling which has been increased by 5.4% since January 1, after an increase of 6.9% in 2023, as shown in table below.

This Scu ceiling has multiple impacts on various social contributions and benefits, and it is indexed to the average salary per capita (SMP) observed during the previous year.
The Official Social Security Bulletin details the different ceiling thresholds for 2024:
- Annual social security ceiling (PASS): 46,368 euros (43,992 euros in 2023);
- Monthly ceiling: 3864 euros (3666 euros in 2023);
- Daily ceiling: 213 euros (202 euros in 2023);
- Hourly ceiling: 29 euros (27 euros in 2023).
The monthly ceiling is now 3,864 euros, the maximum basic pension is therefore 1,932 euros for rights liquidated in 2024.
Note that the basic pension of the general system, which theoretically cannot exceed 50% of the Social Security ceiling, can be increased by 10% for people who have had 3 children, for example.
