The wholesale price of electricity has been very high for several months now. Indeed, if it were displayed at 85 euros per MWh in 2021, it was necessary to count no less than 1,000 euros last year. A real outbreak which is explained in particular by the war in Ukraine, as well as the shutdown of several nuclear reactors in France.

In order to reduce the impact of this increase on French households, the government has set up a tariff shield, then limiting the increase to 15%. Although in some cases it was actually more like 22.23%. But if this measure helps the French a lot, it will soon be history. The State indeed wishes to make disappear this shield, in order to reduce its expenses.
It’s not going to happen overnight, but gradually. And it has already started. Indeed, from this Tuesday, August 1, the price of electricity increases by 10%. An increase which concerns the monthly bills of the regulated blue tariff offered by EDF, to which most French people subscribe. And of course, that worries them.
Because all households and small businesses are concerned, unless you have chosen toa contract not subject to the regulated tariff. But in this case, it is this winter that it could hurt you. Concern is especially affecting owners of electric cars, who will therefore have to pay even more for their recharging. Even if the increase at the beginning of the year had a fairly moderate impact overall.
But if you’re worried about paying a lot more for your electricity every month, there’s a way to limit the damage. And the latter is relatively unknown, because almost not put forward by EDF. This is the Tempo subscription, offered alongside the base rate and the rate including peak and off-peak hours. But what exactly is it?
A smart contract
On its website, the electricity company gives some details about this offer. The purpose of this is to encourage customers to use electricity when the network is less in demand, by charging more when the latter is under tension, particularly in winter. The days of the year are divided into three categoriesnamely blue, white and red, as well as two time slots (peak hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and off-peak hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.).
Each color and slice are associated with specific prices, more or less advantageous. This is the case, for example, during off-peak “blue” days, when the kWh is displayed at 0.1056 euro since August 1. The “red” days during peak hours are billed at 0.7324 euro per kWh. Suffice to say that the difference is huge. But then, what is the point of an electric car?
If you have the possibility of planning the recharge when rates are at their lowest, this will allow you to make significant savings. The journalists ofClean Automotive did the math for a Renault Mégane E-Tech, with no less than 290 euros saved thanks to the Tempo subscription compared to the basic offer. Of course, it all depends on each person’s situation and the household’s overall electricity consumption.
The rise of two-way charging is expected to be a game-changer, as it will be possible to charge your electric car during off-peak hours then to feed his house during peak hours. In particular, the Volvo EX90 will be able to offer this functionality a little later in its marketing.
