Here’s the brand new (and old) favorite programming language

C# wins the title of “Programming Language of the Year 2023” for the first time in the history of the Tiobe Index.

C# won the award for having the largest increase (+1.43%) during the year, says Paul Jansen, CEO of Tiobe Software. The second are Scratch and Fortran, with +0.83% and +0.64% respectively.

C# is taking market share from Java and gaining popularity in areas such as web applications and gaming. It is available for free, evolves at a steady pace and becomes more expressive with each new version, says Mr. Jansen.

Competition at the top

Among other interesting changes in the Tiobe Index 2023, Fortran and Kotlin replace R and Perl in the top 20. According to Mr. Jansen Fortran is well suited to digital processing thanks to its excellent libraries, and is a favorite in many areas. Perl is the favorite of universities, and Kotlin is a competitor to Java, which is easier to learn and write, he comments.

It is very difficult to predict which languages will be among the top 20 of the Tiobe index in 2024, says Jansen. Julia entered the Tiobe Index briefly in 2023, but failed to maintain its position. He emphasizes that the Julia language and community must mature to have a second chance.

He goes on to cite “Dart/Flutter” and “TypeScript” among his predictions, and adds that TypeScript is widely used in the industry, but failed to break into the Tiobe Index.
