“He’s a work colleague!” : this is one of the best lines heard at Marvel, and it comes from a child

Chris Hemsworth has revealed that one of the funniest moments in “Thor: Ragnarok” came straight from the mind of a little fan who was simply visiting the set…

Thor: Ragnarok is one of the funniest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Taika Waititi – who actually worked for Marvel only because he needed the money – took on the God of Thunder saga and surprised many fans with a lighter tone that left us with allowed us to discover Chris Hemsworth in a humorous register that suits him perfectly.

Thus, in the scene where the Grand Master forces Thor to fight different adversaries to gain his freedom there is an improvised line, one of the funniest in the film! When Thor discovers that he must face an enraged Hulk, the Norse god is relieved and shouts: “He’s a work colleague!” This sentence, so simple and effective at the same time, made the audience burst into laughter – and is one of the most memorable in the film.

And curiously, this cult line does not come from the screenwriters. As Chris Hemsworth revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, it was a child who visited the set that day who suggested this line of dialogue.

We had a young child – a Make-A-Wish child [une association qui a pour but d’exaucer le vœu d’enfants gravement malades] – on set that day, and between takes, I was talking with him and going back and forth. And he said, ‘You know, you should say he’s a colleague from work.’

Chris Hemsworth also admitted that 95% of the film was improvised. Taika Waititi is a director who relies heavily on letting go and freedom, letting ideas flow on set. Even in a blockbuster like Ragnarok, where the studio has all the rights, he dared to be true to his freestyle. He himself admitted that he was waiting for a call from Kevin Feige to fire him, but it never happened. “My working style is that I’m often behind the camera, or right next to the camera, yelling at people: ‘Say this, say this!’ Say it like that! I could literally tell Anthony Hopkins how to say a line. I do not care”, he admitted to the MTV microphone during Comic-Con 2017.

The New Zealand filmmaker estimates he was able to improve “80% of the film” by following this method and the best proof is this improvised line straight from the clever mind of a child!

Thor: Ragnarok can be seen streaming again on Disney+.
