Hidden button under the traffic light box: This is what happens when you press it

Small button on the pedestrian traffic light: that’s what it’s there for

At many pedestrian traffic lights in Germany there is a small button hidden under the traffic light box that many people probably don’t know about. For a while on the Internet, it was said that you could get the traffic light to turn green faster if you hit the button several times in a row in a certain sequence. This is nonsense – but the button still has a purpose and thus its meaning.

If you press it, almost the same thing happens as when you press the normal button – but only almost. Because as soon as the pedestrian light turns green, an acoustic signal sounds in addition to the visual signal. The hidden button is ultimately intended for blind and visually impaired people, who learn from the signal that the vehicle traffic is now red and the road can be safely crossed.
