With iOS 15, Apple released a major update for the iPhone in autumn with some interesting new features. But even more exciting are the many small features that lie undetected under the hood. We show the top 3 hidden features that every iPhone owner should know.
Apple is really messing around with iOS 15 and offers numerous new functions for the iPhone.
We have already put together the main functions for you in this article. Many of them are difficult to overlook, such as the new message overview, the revised Safari browser or the new focus feature, which ensures that you are not constantly distracted by messages.
But there is not just one more thing, there are many new features that have stayed under the radar and are waiting for you to discover them. We are introducing you to the top 3 functions for the iPhone that Apple has not yet ripped off.
1. Track app activity
Apple is known to often tweak the data protection functions. IOS 15 is a powerful new tool for users to find out which apps are accessing your phone’s functions and data.
You can find the new “App activity” function in “Settings / Privacy” and then at the bottom under “Record app activity”. Click there and set the switch to “On” if you want to receive a 7-day summary of when and how often all your apps access things like your microphone or microphone or which websites they contact.
Important to know: the app tracking only starts as soon as you have set the switch. The function cannot look into the past. Once you’ve activated the app tracking feature, you’ll have to wait a week. You can then return to this screen to view and / or download the full report.

2. Notifications of the weather app when it starts to rain
The weather app and the weather widget get some obvious improvements in iOS 15, both in terms of design and level of detail.
However, one function that Apple has not advertised at all and is not switched on by default is particularly exciting: an automatic notification when it rains.
To activate the weather averages, open the weather app and tap on the symbol for the list of locations in the lower right corner. Now tap on the “More” button (three dots) in the upper right corner and select “Notifications”. You can switch the notifications on and off independently of each other for your current location and for each saved location.
If you activate this option, you will in future receive a push notification if it starts to rain or snow in the next hour or stops.
In the test of the iOS 15 beta, the function worked so far only semi-convincingly. In German cities in particular, Apple still seems to have some work to do.
When will iOS 15 be available?
iOS 15 has been available for download since September 20, 2021.
Which devices get iOS 15?
The update is available for all devices that are also compatible with iOS 14, i.e. all iPhone models from the iPhone 6s and the 7th generation iPod touch.
How do I install iOS 15 Beta?
What are the main innovations in iOS 15?
With iOS 15, Apple brings numerous innovations to the iPhone. Our 5 highlights:
- FaceTime for everyone: With iOS 15 there is the possibility to be present at FaceTime via browser (Edge, Chrome) with a generated link. So Apple is attacking Zoom, because suddenly Android and Windows users are also on board with FaceTime.
- SharePlay: With iOS 15, you can use FaceTime to share songs with Apple Music, watch a TV show or movie in sync, or share the screen to share apps. At the same time, you stay connected via FaceTime.
- Focus: A new function called Focus should ensure under iOS 15 that you are not constantly distracted by messages. Sure, you can use the “Do not disturb” function to slow down all messages, but it can now be done in a more controlled manner.
- New message overview: If you don’t hang on to your iPhone all the time, you will often find a rather overcrowded overview of messages. That should improve iOS 15. App icons are larger in iOS 15, and contact photos for people are then displayed. Messages that are not time-critical are collected and can be retrieved together.
- Live text: iOS 15 recognizes text in photos. They can be used in various ways. For example, a telephone number can be called directly from a photographed poster or you can copy a WLAN password directly from a notice in the café into the input field.

3. Adjust the speed of the video playback
Apps like YouTube have been offering the possibility of varying the playback speed as desired for half an eternity. The standard video player on the iPhone has not been able to do this so far.
With iOS 15, the standard video player (used for a lot of web videos and by many apps) finally has speed controls too.
And this is how it works: When playing a video, tap on the menu in the lower right corner (the three dots) and on playback speed. Here you can choose between five different speeds (from 0.5 to 2.0 times the speed).
