High stand torn – death drama in Lower Austria: last hunt was his fate

Mourning in Klosterneuburg (Lower Austria)! On Friday night, a tree fell and took down a stand on which a hunter was standing. Any help came too late for the 82-year-old. He wanted to give up his active passion at the end of the year. His colleagues appeared shocked in an interview with the “Krone”.

Herbert F. lived for hunting. The forest was his home. But last but not least, he knew that at 82 years old he had to tone it down. At the end of the year he actually wanted to give up his daily, active passion – but wanted to stalk through the area once before Christmas Eve. Previously, the hunter had shot a roe deer in storms of 90 km/h! A momentous decision. Thursday evening was supposed to be the last hunt for F. from Muckendorf (Lower Austria). He climbed with his rifle onto the high stand in the Klosterneuburger Au, sought protection from the gusts of wind and looked for game. The dead man’s hunting colleagues reported that he had killed another deer – but he was no longer able to rescue the animal. “Person in distress” A huge tree crashed into the hunting facility and buried it along with the huntsman. After the alarm (“person in distress”) was raised, the fire brigade saw a terrible scene. They tried to clear the high elevation with three chainsaws. “Due to the size of the tree, it took three quarters of an hour before it was visible,” says operations manager Benjamin Löbl. However, any help came too late for the 82-year-old. His passion for hunting despite storm warnings cost him his life.
