Higher premiums from 2023 – Every fourth person changes health insurance at the end of the year – News

  • Around every fourth adult in Switzerland changes health insurance at the end of the year – much more than in previous years.
  • The main reason for this is the increase in health insurance premiums.
  • This is shown by a representative survey by the comparison portal Comparis.

Comparis announced on Thursday that the proportion of people switching health insurance companies has so far been in the single-digit percentage range. Now 843 of 3156 people surveyed – around 27 percent from all regions of Switzerland – stated that they would change their basic insurance at the end of the year.

In Switzerland, the premiums for basic health insurance will increase by an average of 6.6 percent in the coming year. The French are particularly willing to change, where 31 percent of those surveyed are insured with another health insurance company in 2023. In German-speaking Switzerland, the proportion of changers is 25 percent and in Ticino 18 percent.

Premium increase as the most important reason for switching

61 percent of those switching described the premium increase as an important or very important reason. 47 percent of those willing to change admitted to notorious changers. 44 percent of those changing stated that poor service at the previous checkout was the main reason for changing. 69 percent of those changing keep their franchise with the new provider.

Comparis health insurance expert Felix Schneuwly is quoted in the statement as saying that he was surprised at the extent of the change. Inflation has probably also increased the pressure to save.

KPT with the largest increase in customers

Proportionally, the number of people moving from Assura and Atupri to KPT is particularly large. This checkout is emerging as the biggest winner in terms of customer growth. The market research institute commissioned by Comparis to conduct the survey also found that many policyholders are switching from Visana to Helsana. According to Comparis, KPT will have around 40 percent more customers in the coming year than in the current year.
