His son claims otherwise: Rincon was driving himself in the fatal accident

His son claims otherwise
Rincon was behind the wheel in the fatal accident

Freddy Rincon did not survive a serious traffic accident ten days ago, the former Colombian football star succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Now the Attorney General announces: Rincon himself was behind the wheel. He contradicts the representation of the son.

Former Colombian soccer star Freddy Rincon was behind the wheel in his fatal traffic accident last week. This was announced by the national prosecutor. “The vehicle that Freddy Rincon was in was driven by the latter,” Attorney General Francisco Barbosa said. The findings would be based on technical investigations and confirmed by witnesses.

The authority contradicts the version of Rincon’s son. He was not involved in the accident himself, but had claimed that the ex-Real Madrid and SSC Napoli player was not driving the accident car.

The van that 55-year-old Rincon and his companions were in collided with a public bus early in the morning of April 11. According to media reports, the van had previously run a red light. Five people were injured in the accident, Rincon being the most severe. He succumbed to his severe head injuries two days later in a hospital in Cali.

Rincon was known as the “Colossus of Buenaventura” during his playing days because of his physique and birthplace. The former offensive player was one of the stars of the Colombian national team, which met eventual world champions Germany in the group stage at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. With his goal in added time, Rincon made it 1-1 in a duel with the DFB selection.

In 2013, Rincon was involved in a serious traffic accident that left him with multiple fractures and a head injury. At that time, the football idol survived, but not the tragic accident on Monday. For the fans of the Cafeteros – as the national team is affectionately called in Colombia – Freddy Rincon has long been immortal.
