Historic victory, fractured country: lessons from Macron’s re-election

Outgoing President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected Sunday evening with 58% of the vote against his opponent Marine Le Pen. With this victory, he becomes the first president to be re-elected since the transition to the five-year term. Many challenges now await Emmanuel Macron, who will have to take into account the contribution of voices from the left and the rise of the RN vote.

Five more years for Emmanuel Macron. The outgoing president was re-elected on Sunday evening against his opponent Marine Le Pen with 58% of the votes in the second round of the presidential election. Among the lessons of these results, it is first of all a big victory, even if we are far from the level of 2017 where the leader of En Marche! had won against the candidate of the National Front with more than 66% of the vote. Another notable fact is the first time since the transition to the five-year term that an outgoing president has been re-elected.

Heading left for Emmanuel Macron?

The question that now arises is with whom will the re-elected president govern? Emmanuel Macron knows that there will be no state of grace. He also knows that one in two voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round voted in his favor. “I know what I owe you”, he said to them on Sunday evening in his victory speech, before adding: “This vote obliges me”. The re-elected president could therefore head left after having put him on the right in 2017.

In a country more fractured than ever, Emmanuel Macron must now bring together as much as possible. A challenge that is not easy, given the result of Marine Le Pen, which garnered 2.5 million more votes than in 2017. A popular vote, and as many voters angry on issues of power of purchase but also security and immigration. If Emmanuel Macron wants to prevent this anger from being reflected in the street, one of his advisers confided on Sunday evening: “We must act quickly, very quickly”.
