What emotions. The State of Play for this Thursday, March 18 is over and the fourteen minutes of gameplay devoted to Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy will certainly have turned the heads of more than one wizard and more than one witch in the world. However, even if this ambitious trailer will have identified a multitude of activities to be carried out on the RPG, it did not tell us if a multiplayer mode would be available.
Hogwarts Legacy: A pure single-player RPG
It didn’t take long for the confirmation to drop via the official PlayStation blog. Chandler Wood, the Community Manager of the game Harry Potter revealed multiple additional information and therefore indicated thatHogwarts Legacy is an entirely single-player game. A ton of activities were showcased during State of Play: the Room of Requirement, magical animal training, customizable gear you can collect and earn across the world, and more. We also saw a romance system where you can become friends with NPCs and more if you like, but nothing suggested a multiplayer side.
No multiplayer for the RPG Harry Potter: is it serious?
As Chandler points out in the blog, Hogwarts Legacy is intended to be a fully single-player game so players can shape their own Hogwarts story. Sometimes a single-player experience is good, especially when it comes to discover a huge open world and explore familiar places in a universe so dear to the hearts of many fans. The scenario involving making choices (good or bad), personalizing your avatar, choosing your house or even exploring the school and its surroundings, are activities that can be done wonderfully on your own. We will take the example of Zelda Breath of Wild of course, or even more recently of Horizon Forbidden West. The contemplative game genre and packed enough with things to do to forget about the multiplayer aspect.
On the other hand, it is true that some activities could probably have been done in online or local multiplayer such as magic duels (PvP), dungeons with big bosses like dragons or quidditch matches. Maybe multiplayer options will be added later in the game, but in the meantime, Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world single-player RPG.
And if you really want a multiplayer adventure in the wizarding world, you should consider Harry Potter Magic Awakened instead, a MMOs mobile which will soon be available in Europe and also published under the Portkey Games label (official Harry Potter games label).
