Homicide in Rapperswil – “Heard voices” – son stabbed his own mother eleven times on the street

The night before the crime, CB * was already under great tension and was afraid, according to the indictment of the See-Gaster district court. Therefore, on the morning of August 11, 2019, he went to the restaurant in Jona, which his mother N. B * ran. The accused described hearing loud voices that morning. They were aggressive, gave him instructions, insulted and threatened him. He believed that people would attack and kidnap him and his mother. He thought that he had to free himself and his mother.

NB * recognized her son’s restlessness and tried to distract him with card games, conversations and a walk. In the meantime, the accused had stuck a knife with a blade almost 8 inches long in his hip pocket without being noticed. In retrospect, he could no longer explain why he did this.

Later in the afternoon, mother and son left the restaurant and were on their way to CB’s apartment. At the entrance to the underpass at Rapperswil train station, the offense occurred. CB stabbed his mother with the kitchen knife, according to the indictment. A passer-by noticed how NB went down and wanted to offer her help. When she saw the woman clutching her bleeding neck, she ran away screaming.

Three other passers-by tried to approach CB, whereupon CB yelled at them. When one of them took the cell phone to call the police, CB took two steps to him and threatened him with the knife, whereupon the latter fled. The suspect then stabbed his mother one or two more times. Before that, he said, according to the public prosecutor’s office: “It is no longer of any value, you saw me”. CB stabbed his mother a total of eleven times. He then ran up the ramp at the station underpass and shouted that he had to do this because otherwise his mother would have been followed. Then he cut himself in the neck with the knife and stabbed his left chest.

While the mother succumbed to her severe injuries, CB made full recovery from his injuries after emergency surgery. He is currently in the St. Gallen North Psychiatry. According to the forensic-psychiatric report, the accused suffers from paranoid schizophrenia as well as from cannabis and drug addiction. The man, who was already being treated for his mental illness, had taken his medicines irregularly. At the time of the crime, he was not under the influence of the prescribed psychotropic drug and suffered a psychotic attack.

The public prosecutor’s office writes in a summons to the general meeting that although CB fulfills the criteria of intentional homicide and threats, he is not liable to prosecution because of his incapacity. An inpatient therapeutic measure should be ordered in a suitable psychiatric facility or a measure enforcement facility. The hearing will take place on Monday in front of the See-Gaster district court.
