If players can now dive into the rest of Aloy’s adventures, thanks to Horizon: Forbidden West, they still had to wait a long time. Indeed, as a reminder, Horizon: Forbidden West was originally due to be released in 2021. However, during gamescom of the same year, the producer and director of the title, Mathijs de Jonge, had announced a postponement: the release was then set for 18 February 2022.
We now know why the Guerrilla Games studio made this decision in 2021: it was to avoid the crunch. The crunch is often a very difficult period for developers, since it is a particular moment during which they work overtime in order to meet deadlines. However, many studios try not to or no longer overwork their teams, and this is the case with the creators of the Horizon license.
Mathijs de Jonge walked past the microphone of the NU journalists and said ” This rarely happens with us. We are aware of the disadvantages that the crunch brings, so we take it into account in our planning. For example, all Guerrilla employees received two weeks of Christmas vacation. They couldn’t even get to the studio since the premises were closed […] We could have released the game at the end of 2021, but we would have had to work overtime. But people also wanted to see their families for Christmas. So that played a key role in the postponement “.
