It is sometimes said that April does what it wants, and this year it is actually stepping out of line a little from an astrological point of view: On Saturday, April 30th, we are dealing with a very special new moon at the end of the month. Not only is it the second new moon in April and the second new moon that takes place in the zodiac sign Aries. A partial solar eclipse also occurs on this new moon. We can’t see them in Europe, but their effects can still affect us – some people more, others less.
What happens during the new moon on April 30th?
As is well known, our moon orbits continuously around the earth and together with the earth around the sun. That is why it sometimes appears to us as a crescent, sometimes as a full moon and sometimes not at all: Depending on the position, we only see a part of the side that is illuminated by the sun (sickle or crescent), the entire side that is illuminated (full moon) or that in the shade side facing away from the sun. The latter is always the case when the moon is between the earth and the sun. We refer to this constellation as the new moon and experience it approximately every 29.5 days.
Most of the time, the sun simply shines past the moon, since the moon’s orbit around the earth usually does not cross the earth’s orbit around the sun. But at about every sixth new moon, the two do cross. And then, from our point of view, there will be a solar eclipse. Just like on April 30 of this year. However, during this eclipse the moon only covers part of our sun, which is why we speak of a partial solar eclipse.
Where and how can we track the eclipse?
The partial solar eclipse on April 30th is best observed in South America. At 8:45 p.m. our time, the shadow of the moon appears near Antarctica, from where it travels north and finally reaches the south-west coast of South America. In Chile, Argentina and Patagonia, the sun, partially covered by the moon, can then be seen in the evening hours (that’s the time there – almost tomorrow here with us).
Very important: In order to observe the sun and what is happening, we need so-called solar eclipse goggles or welding goggles. Looking at the sun with the naked eye can cause significant visual damage. Even commercially available sunglasses are not enough to protect the eyes from the sunlight for longer periods of time.
In Germany we don’t get to see anything of this solar eclipse. At 10:30 p.m., the new moon on April 30 peaks for us in Aries, during which time it is in an ascending motion. According to the horoscope, the following zodiac signs could feel this new moon, which is special in several ways, particularly strongly – in the form of an important, perhaps life-changing enlightenment.
