“House of the Dragon” shows us a time that has long been forgotten in “Game of Thrones”: the time of the dragons. But even though there have been no dragons circling Westeros for a long time, Daenerys Targaryen managed to reintroduce the mystical creatures when she hatched the dragons Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. But where do her dragon children come from?

Where do Daenerys’ dragon eggs come from?

For her wedding to Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen received three fossilized dragon eggs from Magister Illyrio Mopatis of Pentos. According to him, these came from the shadowlands beyond Asshai. Time is said to have turned them into stone. But where did the eggs really come from?

The family chronicle “Fire and Blood: The Rise and Fall of the House Targaryen of Westeros” by George RR Martin provides information. In the book, Archmaester Gyldayn tells of the sailor Lady Elissa Weitmann, a confidante of Queen Rhaena Targaryen.

Apparently the women were very close and were more than just friends. After Rhaena married Elissa’s brother Androw, they went to Dragonstone together. When the adventurous sailor became bored, Elissa secretly stole three eggs from Rhaena’s dragon Dreamfire to obtain gold to build a ship.

Fearing that another house would appropriate the dragons from the eggs, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen sent a search for Elissa. This traveled to Pentos and from there overland to Braavos. She then sold the dragon eggs to the Sea Lord of Braavos under the name Alys Westhill.

Centuries later, the now fossilized dragon eggs found their way back into the hands of a Targaryen. Daenerys managed to hatch these centuries after the last dragon died out.

What happened to the mother?

In “House of the Dragon” we experience the merciless war of inheritance between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen. This battle went down in history as the “Dance of the Dragons”. The so-called “Storming of the Dragon Pit” was one of the bloody highlights of the conflict and almost caused the complete extinction of the dragon race.

During the uprisings in King’s Landing, a crazy mob gained access to the dragon pit. The Targaryens kept their dragons captive in this. The mob attacked the animals that were in the pit at the time. The chained dragons fought back with their horns, claws and teeth and fought for their lives.

When the wild people attacked Dreamfire, the dragon lady tore her chains from the anchorage and rose into the sky. She circled in the dome of the building and still kept getting hit by people. When the dragon was hit in the eye by a crossbow bolt, Dreamfire made a last desperate attempt to escape. She repeatedly hit the roof of the dome with her body until it collapsed, burying the dragon and numerous people under the rubble.

What happened to the baby dragons?

In the second season of “Game of Thrones,” Daenerys managed to hatch three baby dragons from the fossilized eggs of Dreamfire. She named them Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. Together with the last official Targaryen heir, the dragons moved to Westeros to take the Seven Kingdoms with the “Mother of Dragons”.

Be careful, there are spoilers for “Game of Thrones” ahead

Viserion

When there was a fight against the White Walkers at the Wall, Viserion was hit by an ice spear that the Night King threw at the dragon. When hit, the animal fell into the water and died. At the Night King’s command, Viserion awoke and became a revenant himself. After the Night King’s death, all the White Walkers died, including Viserion.

Rhaegal

When Daenerys and her fleet went to Dragonstone after the battle against the White Walkers, the Targaryens were ambushed. On Euron Greyjoy’s orders, several scorpions (a special weapon) were fired at the dragons. Rhaegal was hit first in the chest, then in the wing, and finally in the neck. Mortally wounded, the dragon fell into the depths and sank into the sea.

Drogon

After the murder of Daenerys Targaryen, Drogon gained access to the Red Keep. Furious at her death, he destroyed the Iron Throne before grabbing her body and flying away. At a meeting of the Small Council it was reported that the dragon was seen disappearing towards the east. Bran then left the meeting and stated that he wanted to find the dragon personally.

How much of Dreamfire’s story we’ll see in House of the Dragon remains to be seen. However, the storming of the dragon pit offers a lot of material for good actions. The dramatic death of Traumfeuer is particularly memorable.

However, it’s not that far yet. The first season of “House of the Dragon” has just started on free TV on ProSieben, and the new episodes can also be streamed for free on Joyn. In the first season, the dance of the dragons initially only builds up and initially spares Dreamfire from her tragic end.
