Housing study shows – hope of owning a home in Salzburg is particularly small

More and more people from Salzburg consider buying property unaffordable. This is shown by a residential study commissioned by Erste/Sparkasse. At the same time, the dream of owning your own four walls is unbroken.

The dream of owning a house or a condominium is unbroken in Salzburg. More than two-thirds of those questioned in a large housing study by Erste/Sparkasse said so. No wonder: Owning a property is considered a smart pension plan. The problem: a number of factors have recently made it increasingly difficult to acquire one. 84 percent of Salzburg residents therefore believe that only higher earners can afford to own property. The hope of owning a home is dwindling“The dream of owning your own four walls must not burst. We are ready to finance home ownership. However, all actors need a clear commitment to promoting the development of property and further adapting the currently applicable regulation,” Salzburger Sparkasse boss Peter Paulweber alludes to the tightened lending guidelines since August 2022. In Salzburg, these have sometimes led to that the real estate lending volume has more than halved within a year.
