How did Spotify choose your sound city for its Wrapped 2023?

The Spotify Wrapped 2023 surprised many users by assigning them a “sound city”, sometimes very surprising. The platform published a text to explain how it chose the cities.

Every year, Spotify Wrapped delights users of the music streaming site. The site allows its users to see their musical retrospective of the year, with the most listened to artists, the most popular genres, and the number of minutes spent listening to music during the year.

Spotify Wrapped 2023 has been available for a few days, and, to the delight of users, this year also contains some new features: a “ musical portrait ”, and above all, a “ sound city “. These cities particularly intrigued Internet users, who did not hesitate to be surprised about (formerly Twitter). Some towns thus seemed to have been chosen completely at random, and others, such as Burlington in the state of Vermont, in the United States, returned very regularly among the sound towns.

To better explain its selection, Spotify went into more detail in a blog post and revealed how the app chose its users’ city — as well as the 6 most popular cities as “Sound Town.”

How did Spotify choose sound cities?

In its text, Spotify specifies that “ sound cities selected for users » were chosen according to two factors: “ the most listened to artists by a user during the year and how these artists are listened to in other cities “. According to the streaming platform, “ it is an objective process that relies on the user’s listening history “.

Many cities have been designated as “Sound Towns”: although some have been much more talked about than others thanks to their popularity, 1,300 cities around the world were highlighted during Wrapped. As for the 6 most popular cities in the world, they are Berkerley, California, Burlington, Vermont, Cambridge, a city in Massachusetts, United States, Cuiabá, Brazil, and Jakartan Indonesia. You can find the most listened to titles in each city here.

And if you’re wondering what other songs are most listened to elsewhere in the world, you can also consult a map created by Spotify and explore the top tracks in the Philippines, Argentina, or even Sweden. Treat yourself.
