How Google Shopping could put lots of models out of work with AI

The Google Shopping section of the Google app is getting a new artificial intelligence feature. It allows you to change the mannequin when looking for clothes to buy, to find one that suits you and do your shopping.

Google is adding two AI-powered features to its Shopping section in its mobile app. Two features currently launched in the United States, but which could arrive here soon.

Choose the model that suits you: it’s Google’s AI that adapts the clothes

When buying clothes on the Internet, it is difficult to know if they correspond to our morphology or our skin tone. But sometimes we don’t have a choice: we can’t try them and we don’t know how they fall on us.

Google says its generative AI model can take a single image of an item of clothingand accurately reflect how it would drape, bend, cling, stretch, and form folds and shadows. But the strength of the concept is elsewhere: by going to the page of a garment, you can choose the model you want.

It is Google that has taken pictures of several models in different positions and can adapt the clothes to these models who pose. Sizes range from XXS to XL, different skin tones are represented with the Monk skin tone scale, as well as several ethnicities, body shapes and hair types.

Currently, only women’s tops from Anthropologie, Everlane, H&M, and LOFT are compatible with this AI feature, in the US only. To use it, it’s quite simple: on the page of a garment, we click on “Try on models» («Try on models” in French). Then, a series of models is displayed, each time with their size.

Google announces that “this technology can expand to more brands and items over time.” Moreover, “more options will be available for virtual try-on, including men’s tops to be launched later this year“, can we read on the Google site.

More and more filters to find the rare pearl, thanks to artificial intelligence

Another feature that has been added to Google Shopping on smartphones: find products more easily using new filters. Google says machine learning and its visual matching algorithms help refine searches.

You can choose a color, a style, a pattern. At the moment, this feature is only available for tops, in product listings. All while defining a price range.
